Description
This is a working mechanical cigarette dispenser box dating from the late 1940s. These were made in occupied Japan and sold as novelties in the US. This one was sold in Seaside, Oregon in 1949. There is a very faint inscription under the dogs. You really need a magnifier to read it. The box is in very good condition and works. It only works properly with the short size cigarettes. Not the long ones. Guessing this wouldn't be a factor if you roll your own. The box measures 4 1/4 inches x 3 3/8 inches. It is 2 3/4 inches tall. The dog on the front is 3/4 inch. There used to be a label on the bottom of the box. The mark is still there. To work the box you load the box with cigarettes, then slide the top back with the little metal handle. A drawer pops out of the lower front and a cigarette rolls down onto a wooden fork lift type appendage. The cigarette is lifted into the dogs mouth. On the upper right corner of the back of the box there is a small area of veneer loss.(Shown in final photo.) It is totally smooth, so unlikely to progress further. Please see the photos and ask if there are questions. I ship to the lower 48 states. Thanks for taking the time to look at this.
