    Description

A VERY unusual Stangl design sample prototype 10" plate with carved ORCHIDS. Has the wiped engobe appearance of the terra rose. Don't think you will find a more attractive or unique Stangl design sample. This plate has been in our Stangl collection since the early 1990's
According to Rob Runge's Stangl Dinnerware Book, the designers at Stangl were to develop new dinnerware patterns, keeping abreast of trends and popular tastes. They were tried on 9 or 10" plates with nearly 90 per cent of these sample patterns never produced. Unused samples were not thrown out, however, and any item not necessary for daily production was packed up and sent to the Flemington outlet to be sold. Consequently, many of Stangl's prototypes and test pieces are able to be preserved. Often design samples were not marked as is this plate
Rob has seen this plate in person and definitely feels it is a wonderful example of an unusual Stangl design sample prototype plate
In his Artware Book on pg 237 he discusses the Bahamas Independence and Tourism Plates..... Apparently Stangl designer, Sandra Ward, in 1973, developed a line of souvenir plates for the Bahamas Department of Tourism, featuring a line of bold and colorful designs, often associated with the tropics, including "orchids". Samples were shipped to the Bahamas but there is no information indicating they were ever produced. This may be one of those plates
Whatever it is, it's certainly unique and beautiful! Carved and decorated with extreme detail
CONDITION:  There are some minor flaws in the plate along with several rim flakes.  See close up photos
