RUEBEN GOLDBERG (1883-1970) was an American cartoonist, inventor, sculptor and author. He is best known for his indicate, zany, complex cartoon inventions - designed to do verysmile tasks. Rube Goldberg began his career as a sports cartoonist at the San Francisco Cghronicle and then moved to New York City to draw for the New York Evening Mail. He became one of the highest paid cartoonists of the era as rival newspapers attempted to lure him away from the Mail. Goldberg was drawing several comic strips at the time - Mike and Ike, Boob McNutt, Foolish Questions, Sideshow, Lala Palooza, What Are You Kicking About?, Telephonies, The Weekly Meeting of the Ladies's Club, and Doc Wright. The National Cartoonists society
named their highest award after him - the RUEBEN AWARD and Goldberg deigned the statue himself
