For the first time in history, the Olympic Games were held in South America. The largest city in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, has been chosen as the capital of the XXXI Summer Olympics. From 5 to 21 August 2016, it hosted Olympic teams from all over the world.
In honor of this event, the Central Bank of Brazil has issued a series of commemorative coins dedicated to the upcoming Games since 2012. The coins were issued in batches. Each of the four lots of Olympic coins includes four coins for regular circulation in denomination of one Brazilian real (R $ 1). The coins feature Olympic and Paralympic sports.
