ANNI DOM /1818" below. The sculptor, Zepherin Ferrez was part of an elite group of artists, the "French Artistic Mission", recruited by the new emperor to establish European standards in all areas of art in Brazil. The surfaces were lightly chased during production to partly remove imperfections in the surface from originals. Most of the gilding is intact with only minor spots on the high points where the copper center shows through.
This piece is traditionally known as the
Senatus Fluminenses
medal, referring to the reverse inscription.
